I notice the last entry in the bibliography says that Gairdner’s [i]Lollardy and the Reformation[/i] was in two volumes; this should read four volumes.
A big work, and quite a big disappointment; Gairdner’s prejudice against the Reformation is systemic, and notwithstanding his undoubted erudition it’s not a book to put anywhere near the top of the reading list.
There has, of course, been much research into Lollardy since this article was written and there is a substantial body of more recent work which is very worthwhile.
Yes, but I think that particular volume of the Schaff-Herzog encyclopaedia was probably published before Volumes 3 and 4 of Gairdner.
