S M Wajid Ali was Regimental Munshi to King George V's Bengal Sappers and Miners, Roorkee, and his book has a recommendatory foreword by H G Brayne, Captain, Royal Engineers. The book specialises in conversational ability in Hindustani/Urdu relevant to the military life of the time; it is printed entirely in Roman type apart from a short section near the end on Urdu script (a form of Persian/Arabic script rather than the Devanagari script used for Hindi).
